With 2.71 billion smartphone users in the world as of 2019, it’s safe to say that technology is a big part of many of our daily lives. And, when new tech is released each year, people often do anything to get their hands on it – some going as far to break the bank altogether. However, before you get in line for that new multi-camera smartphone, it’s important to know that there are a few ways to get a new device without cutting into your savings.
Payment plans and credit cards
A payment plan can be a great thing if you’re in the market for some new tech, as it gives you the option to pay off the new device over an allotted amount of time – in smaller, more manageable amounts. It never hurts to ask if there is a payment plan available when shopping for new tech, and in many cases, you’ll find that many stores allow you to opt for a payment plan at checkout. Credit cards are another option, and are also a good choice when paying for an expensive item. Credit cards can allow you to pay in full upfront, and later pay it off to the credit card company. While both options are resourceful, it’s important to go about them responsibly, as your credit score can take a big hit if you miss your payments.
Shopping the sales
While that new tech might have a hefty price tag, waiting for it to go on sale might just be the answer when it comes to saving some money on the latest smartphone, watch or TV. Not only will you get a much better deal than the average retail price, but you’ll have the satisfaction of not spending a huge chunk of change on a new device. If you can wait for Black Friday, Christmas sales, or Cyber Monday, you’re sure to find a great deal on all things tech – though it doesn’t hurt to keep your eye out for sales all year round, too.
The same features at a fraction of the price
It’s also worth mentioning that you can often find the features of the newest tech in other less-expensive brands and models. For example, when it comes to smartphones, the iPhone is one of the most notable brands that carries high-end features like quality cameras and a great display. However, the same features can also be found in other Android brands for a fraction of the price.
Compromising on a lesser-known brand is a great way to go if you don’t like the sound of payment plans or credit cards, and can give you and your wallet peace of mind, knowing that you paid for the device upfront. But, if you can’t bear to part with the well-known flagship brand, keep in mind that they too have clearance sales – for instance, Apple is selling their iPhone SE (which is currently running iOS 12) at a heavily discounted and affordable price.
At the end of the day, getting the latest tech in your hands doesn’t mean you need to go broke in the process. By paying through a payment plan, shopping the sales, or even compromising and buying a different model or brand with all the same features, you’re sure to be able to get the latest technology without making a mess of your finances.
